— Audience gems from Holland's new star quartet.

Every summer, our artistic director, pianist Thormod Rønning Kvam , invites excellent colleagues from Norway and abroad to perform together in some of the finest chamber music. This summer is no exception, when this Sunday he brings the Dutch Animato Kwartet to perform one of the truly great audience favorites: Dvořák's Piano Quintet .

We will also get to know Animato better — who recently won one of the Netherlands' biggest classical music awards. They are now traveling around Europe, and they are bringing with them Haydn's melodious string quartet nicknamed Sunrise — as well as Anton Webern's Langsamer Satz . Before crowning it all with, of course, Dvořák. You don't want to miss this!

    Antonín Dvořák (1841—1904)
Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81

  • Formed in 2013, Animato Kwartet is considered the Netherlands' most promising young string quartet. The quartet, which has Norwegian Inga Våga Gaustad as first violinist, is known for its intense and powerful playing and strong stage presence. In the fall of 2023, they were awarded the prestigious Kersjes Prize, which is awarded to exceptional talents in Dutch chamber music. Earlier that year, Animato received both first prize and the audience prize at the Kammermusikpreis Kultur Gut Hasselburg , while in 2021 they won third prize and the jury's special prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Trondheim.

After they won the audience award in the Dutch Classical Talent in 2022, the jury stated the following: "Four top players with an exuberant energy, they grab you from the first note! The quartet elevates each other and the music, and is a particularly promising addition to the Dutch string quartets". In October 2023, the quartet was invited to play a concert in the chamber music series at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. The Animato Kwartet has been seen, among other things, during the Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam and the Concertgebouw, where they have been invited back in 2026.

Thormod Rønning Kvam is establishing himself as a pianist in the young, top Scandinavian ranks. Performances with the Royal Norwegian Marines Band and the Norwegian Wind Ensemble as well as at venues such as London's Wigmore Hall and the Trondheim Chamber Music Festival are some of the highlights of recent years. In 2023, he was appointed Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for 'making a difference through his musical work' and in the same year received the Nils Larsen International Debut Prize. In April this year, he was awarded the State Artist Scholarship for Young Musicians for two years. Thormod is artistic director of Aulaseriene , which has concerts in the University Auditoriums in Oslo and Bergen as well as at the cultural destination Ramme in Hvitsten .

Welcome to a unique musical experience!
