Summer Night by the Fjord: Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Koch & Bjørnstad

  • Havlystparken, Ramme Rammeveien 90 1545 Hvitsten (map)

— From Grieg to our time.

The summer's classical finale features a Scandinavian star trio in a programme that revolves around some of our most beautiful Nordic music. As the main works, we will hear both Edvard Grieg's Cello Sonata in A minor and his perhaps most beloved vocal work: the song cycle Haugtussa, based on Arne Garborg's poetry about the shepherdess Veslemøy.

On stage is one of our most internationally sought-after mezzosopranos: Marianne Beate Kielland. Together with Swedish cellist Tobias van der Pals and Bergen-born pianist Pål Eide, we will experience a programme where Grieg's music is reflected against our own time — including music by both Rachmaninoff and Ukrainian Silvestrov, as well as the premiere of Jesper Kochs Folk Songs: three Swedish folk songs many know through Monica Zetterlund, Bill Evans, and Jan Johansson. Welcome to this summer's finale!

  • Marianne Beate Kielland is considered one of Europe's leading mezzo-sopranos and regularly performs on the major concert stages with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Jordi Savall and Masaaki Suzuki. Garborg's Veslemøy has followed her for a number of years: In 2012 she was Grammy-nominated for the album Veslemøy Synsk, and she has also recorded Grieg's Haugtussa with pianist Nils Anders Mortensen. "A voice pure in quality, wide in range and unfalteringly true in intonation", writes the British Gramophone.

Pianist Pål Eide was born in Bergen and had his international breakthrough with the album Grey Clouds, which received top reviews in leading European and American music magazines. He is one of very few pianists to have been invited to record an album on Edvard Grieg's own grand piano at Troldhaugen, Pictures. "Eide's tone is unfailingly gorgeous throughout," wrote critic Ken Meltzer in the American Fanfare.

Cellist Tobias van der Pals is both a performer and a musical rediscoverer: When he and Eide made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2022, they premiered the cello sonata by Leopold van der Pals — a work that had never before been performed in public, and which van der Pals himself has brought out. “…the response of the New York audience was ecstatic,” wrote Seen and Heard International. He is also behind Sunday’s new Haugtussa version.

We wish you an enjoyable, unique concert experience with us. Welcome!
